George Wireman stands next to the trunk of one of 11 Scarlet Oak Trees planted in 1922 in honor of the eleven Thurmont boys lost in the Great War. This tree was damaged in 2008 and George spoke about sitting under this tree during many of the concerts and other events he attended at Memorial Park. He was 2 years old when the trees were planted and he felt as though he had lost an old friend when this tree was removed.

In Memory of
George Wireman
November 11, 1920
January 5, 2012

George served as Thurmont Official Historian having been awarded the title on June 15, 2008 in recognition of his lifelong interest in Thurmont History. He also organized and hosted the Concerts in the Park for 21 years, served on the Parks Commission and was involved in many local events including serving as Master of Ceremonies
for the Thurmont Bicentennial program held at
Memorial Park in 1951.

His book “Gateway To The Mountains’, published in 1969
and his regular columns in the Catoctin Enterprise and Catoctin Banner will be a valuable resource for those with an interest in Thurmont history for generations to come.

Many also knew George as an avid railroad enthusiast both for his model railroad display and for his service as a Conductor on the Walkersville Southern Railroad.

George seemed to be everywhere in Thurmont, whether you saw him walking, read his articles in the paper, listened to
him on WTHU radio, visited his model train, sat with him in Memorial Park, or read his book. He truly was a
local treasure and he will be missed by everyone!

Join us as we celebrate the life and times of
George Wireman
on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012 at Catoctin High School begining at 1:00pm.
